Thank you for stopping by The Temperate Traveler!

We are Maureen and Tim, a 30-something couple who have been clean and sober for more than a dozen years, and see traveling the world as a way to make the most out of our new lease on life. We aren’t digital nomads–we live in an adorable river town in New Jersey that we love, but we also have a passion for travel.

We’ve been to 9 countries over the past 7 years: Portugal, Turkey, Mexico (six times), England, France, Croatia, Spain, Greece and Nicaragua, Barbados, and to cities across the United States, from California to Florida.

One of the things we noticed when researching each of those trips is the lack of activities for travelers who don’t drink.

We understand that not everyone wants to spend their vacation downing morning daiquiris at an all-inclusive in Cancun, pub-crawling in Ireland or touring wineries in Napa (and wasting precious vacation time nursing a hangover), so this blog is for tourists who are looking for fun activities that don’t revolve around alcohol. For readers who are also in recovery, we include information on local English-speaking 12-step meetings in the cities and towns we travel to.

In addition, we plan several sober group trips throughout the year, to connect with like-minded travelers doing fun sober activities. Check out our Come With Us section for more information about our next trip!

We know we are probably not the only non-drinkers who enjoy traveling and don’t enjoy feeling awkward, so we wanted to provide a guide for folks like us.  We hope you find this blog entertaining and helpful!
